Kaliedy is, first and foremost, a family business. Retail is in the Ward DNA. The nursery retail journey began in 1992 when David Ward (Ben, Jonny and Laura’s Dad) started Mothercare Ireland with one store in Stephens Green.  Over the next 20 years they grew this business to one of the most successful Mothercare franchises in the world and a brand many Irish parents grew up with and trusted.


Ben, Jonny, Laura, Rachel, and Corrine all worked within the Mothercare business, gaining nearly 100 years of hands on experience in the nursery industry. Supporting parents is something we’ve grown up with, and it’s something that still drives us today.

Kaliedy was born during the pandemic of 2020, when the world was in lockdown and families needed reliable ways to shop for their little ones from home.  Our mission was simple, we wanted Kaliedy to provide world class customer service to parents in Ireland.  We were the first nursery retailer to provide next day delivery on products and instant messaging via whatsapp.  We secured over 1,000 five star reviews in our first 6 months and won several prestigious industry awards.

As the world reopened our next step was to find a suitable store location as we knew how important it was for parents to see, feel, and try products in person.  Especially big purchases like pushchairs, car seats, and nursery furniture.  Having traded with Mothercare in all the main shopping centres and retail parks around the country we wanted to find a space away from the hustle and bustle of traffic jams, finding a parking space and walking long distances to get to stores.

That vision led Jonny to Kilcroney Furniture, a 20,000 sq ft furniture store in a tranquil setting 2mins off the N11 in North Wicklow with a large car park.  Mrs Verwijs has ran Kilcroney Furniture for over 50 years with the shared ideals of a retail operation that puts customers first.  By October 2022, we were painting walls, setting up stands, and bringing the Kaliedy store to life.

On 12th December 2022, the Kaliedy Store officially opened. Since then, our little family business has grown from strength to strength. Today, we have almost 6,000 square feet of retail space showcasing an exceptional range of premium nursery brands. Parents travel from all over Ireland to visit us, get hands-on with products, ask questions, and experience the Kaliedy difference.

    Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Our own-brand packaging is 100% recyclable and plastic-free. 

    We reuse cardboard boxes where possible and seal deliveries with recyclable tape.

    Our mailer bags are biodegradable, helping to reduce waste at every stage.

    They may be small steps, but together they make a big difference and we’re committed to continuing to improve for the sake of our planet and future generations.

Jonny

I was previously part of the family team that ran Mothercare Ireland and I worked there for 18 years starting in buying and then covering a wide range of roles from logistics, store operations and finance.  Unfortunately that business is no longer here but we did a huge amount right and we aim to build on the best parts of that business with Kaliedy.  Having launched online only and won several industry awards all the while becoming Irelands top rated Nursery store we felt the time was right to open our first physical store. We look forward to serving you either in person or online.

I am married to Aoife and we have 3 boys.

Laura

I’ve been working in the nursery industry for more years than I’d like to admit! I started out in Mothercare Blackrock while studying in college, and after finishing my degree, I moved into marketing the brand. I’ve always loved this side of the business.

Working with Kaliedy has been especially exciting. We’re passionate about bringing the newest and most innovative products to parents first; and it’s my job to make sure you hear all about them!

But my favourite part of working at Kaliedy is when couples come in to collect their Newborn Bundle. The nervous excitement, the chats, running through everything again, and helping them load up their car. Sometimes they even bring the whole family along, which always adds to the fun and buzz. It’s the people who make our job different, meaningful, and enjoyable every day.

And if you visit the store, you might also meet my dog Finn. He’s usually chilling in the stock room… until someone spots him! Then he’ll happily pop out to say hello and welcome you to Kaliedy.

I have six nephews to keep me entertained! Yes our family events are football filled, highly competitive, and pretty rowdy!

I’ve been proudly working in the nursery industry since 2008, starting out in Mothercare Carrickmines, where I spent 12 wonderful years as a supervisor. Those years gave me a wealth of hands-on experience—helping families choose the right car seats and pushchairs, exploring feeding options, and guiding them through all the essentials. I loved being part of those exciting early moments as parents prepared for their new arrival.

For the past 5 years, I’ve had the joy of continuing that journey with Kaliedy, where I’m able to share everything I’ve learned and support families with the same care, honesty, and enthusiasm.

As a mum of three  —I know firsthand how precious those early days are. I draw on both my years of experience and my own parenting journey to offer warm, practical, and heartfelt advice. Supporting parents as they welcome their little ones into the world is something I care deeply about, and it’s a joy to help families feel confident and ready for what’s ahead.

I have 8+ years working in the design world.  Previously managed all the design for Mothercare Ireland and have worked with Kaliedy building their brand and visual assets.

A mum of 2 amazing little boys (Oliver 2 years, George 4 years) I’ve found you really do want to give your baby the absolute best. From working with Mothercare and more recently Kaliedy, I know how important it is to trust baby brands so I’m very excited to be working on these wonderful new and trusted products.
